    10. 9 April 1968 – 9 April 2018- 50th anniversary of first launch from the Guiana Space Centre, Europe’s spaceport

      Monday 9 April in Kourou, CNES President Jean-Yves Le Gall led the ceremony commemorating the 50th anniversary of the first launch from the Guiana Space Centre. It was on 9 April 1968 that the Véronique sounding rocket, France’s first launcher, soared skywards from Europe’s spaceport. The pioneers of this great adventure and several former directors of the space centre were present at today’s event.

    15. Europe’s launchers sector gears up to boost competitiveness

      CNES has sold its almost 35% stake in Arianespace to Airbus Safran Launchers, in line with decisions reached at the last ministerial council meeting of the European Space Agency (ESA) at the end of 2014. The new ownership structure has been crafted in response to the request from the agency’s member states to reorganize Europe’s launcher sector in order to make it more competitive.

    17. 75th straight success for Ariane 5 Four new Galileo satellites in orbit Europe’s satellite navigation system now a reality

      Thursday 17 November, Ariane 5 completed a flawless launch from Europe’s spaceport at the Guiana Space Centre, orbiting the 15th, 16th, 17th and 18th satellites for the European Galileo satellite navigation programme. Ultimately, Galileo will offer much greater precision and reliability than any other satellite navigation system in the world. The flight marked the European launcher’s 75th straight success since 2003.

      The Ariane 6 programme, approved at the ESA Ministerial Council meeting of 2 December 2014, seeks to halve launch costs per kilogram compared to Ariane 5. CNES has responsibility for developing ground support equipment at the Guiana Space Centre (CSG) and as such is in charge of building the new ELA4 launch complex for Ariane 6. An amendment to the contract of 12 August 2015 was signed today at ESA headquarters in the presence of Thierry Mandon, Secretary of State for Higher Education and Research.
