      Friday 17 January, CNES President Jean-Yves Le Gall was in Washington at the invitation of His Excellency Philippe Etienne, France’s Ambassador to the United States, to extend CNES’s New Year wishes to the U.S. space community. He took advantage of his visit to meet Mike Gold, Associate Administrator for NASA's Office of International and Interagency Relations, and Scott Pace, Executive Secretary of the National Space Council.

    9. HUMAN SPACEFLIGHT SYMPOSIUM IN BANGALORE- CNES TO SUPPORT INDIA’S PROGRAMME

      Friday 24 January, CNES President Jean-Yves Le Gall was the guest of honour at the international Human Spaceflight Symposium organized in Bangalore, India, by the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA), the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Astronautical Society of India (ASI). On this occasion, he called for cooperation between France and India in human spaceflight to be pursued in the long term, with CNES’s support for the Gaganyaan missions as the first step towards future collaboration on the development of India’s planned space station.

    11. Solar storms impact Earth’s neighbourhood

      Fifteen years after they were first acquired, data from the Cluster mission continue to reveal new insights into the disturbances generated by solar storms when they hit Earth’s magnetosphere. For the first time, scientists have succeeded in measuring the complexity and amplitude of these magnetic wave disturbances using data from the CIS instrument on the four Cluster satellites.

      High-precision satellite altimetry to improve our understanding of the oceans and their role in climate change dates back to 1992. For it was then that the TOPEX/Poseidon satellite was launched—the result of close cooperation between CNES and NASA. In order to mark this 25th anniversary, on 7 September 2017 the CNES welcomed a large delegation from NASA and the JPL to the Toulouse Space Centre in France.

    13. CNES’s ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certifications renewed

      CNES’s Management System was audited in October with excellent results at its four centres of excellence in Paris Les Halles, Paris Daumesnil, Toulouse and Kourou. After its audit, certifying body AFNOR Certification confirmed the renewal of the agency’s ISO 9001 quality and ISO 14001 environmental management certifications.

      Even after its mission ended, the Rosetta probe is still teaching us a lot about comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko. On 9th June, Bernard Marty from the Centre de recherches pétrographiques et géochimiques (joint institute between the CNRS and the University of Lorraine) and his colleagues from the Rosina consortium (PI: K. Altwegg) published new results in Science, showing a quantitative link between comets and our planet’s atmosphere.

He hailed the unstinting efforts of journalists covering space and working to raise its profile and bring the sector’s everyday real-world applications to the attention of citizens. The traditional gathering also gave him the opportunity to look ahead to the key events and milestones that await the agency in 2020.

    18. Successful 250th Ariane launch- Ariane 5 orbits TIBA-1 and Inmarsat GX5

      Tuesday 26 November, Ariane 5 completed a flawless launch from Europe’s spaceport at the Guiana Space Centre (CSG), placing into orbit two telecommunications satellites: TIBA-1, developed by Thales Alenia Space and Airbus Defence & Space for the Egyptian government, and GX5, built by Thales Alenia Space for Inmarsat. The launch was the eighth of the year from the CSG, the fourth mission in 2019 for Ariane 5 and the 250th flight in the Ariane series.
