  2. Investigating a tumultuous paleoclimate on Mars

    In an article published in April, William Rapin, a research scientist at the IRAP astrophysics and planetology research institute, presents with his team the first indications that Mars’ climate underwent fluctuations in its ancient past. These results were obtained thanks to the exceptional resolution of the RMI camera on the Curiosity rover.

    The 10th French Excellence awards ceremony was held on Thursday 5 December at the Austerlitz Auditorium of the Hôtel National des Invalides, in the presence of its President Maurice Tasler and CNES President Jean-Yves Le Gall. CNES, a laureate in 2014 and 2017, celebrated this 10th anniversary with the presentation of its film CNES serving French Excellence.

  10. CNES at the 2019 International Paris Air Show- An exceptional opening day

    The 53rd International Paris Air Show at Le Bourget opened its doors today. CNES is showcasing France’s space activities in its retro-futuristic public pavilion in front of the Musée de l’Air et de l’Espace, at the foot of the Ariane 5 mock-up.

    The ExoMars 2016 mission’s Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO) was successfully captured into Martian orbit Wednesday 19 October. However, the landing of Schiaparelli had still not been confirmed at the end of our video broadcast of the event. The mission’s engineers were set to spend the night poring over data acquired by various satellites orbiting Mars to track down the tiny lander.

    The first missions to reach the surface of Mars date back 40 years, but many mysteries still lie beneath its top layer of iron oxide. To delve deeper into the red planet, the InSight lander is carrying a system able to drill down to five metres and sound Mars’ surface over a radius of thousands of kilometres. Following its arrival on Mars, we talk about what we already know and what we hope to discover there with CNES’s Francis Rocard, head of Solar System Exploration programmes, and Philippe Laudet, SEIS project leader for InSight and head of the agency’s Astronomy and Astrophysics programme.
